Librarian of the Year

To recognize excellence in librarianship, and encourage participation, development, and promotion of the Association of Librarians in the Jamaica Library Service (ALJALS)

The award will be annually presented at the ALJALS Annual Luncheon/Banquet

Successful candidates should demonstrate:

  1. Consistent embodiment of the highest standards of librarianship which encompasses dress and grooming, deportment, decorum, creativity and innovation
  2. Resourcefulness in conceiving and executing innovative and creative programmes to promote public/school librarianship
  3. Strong leadership qualities in the execution of duties
  4. Community involvement in related associations/service clubs
  5. Being an active member of the Association (serve on at least one committee)
  6. Contribute at least one article to the ALJALS news (e.g. poetry, letter, report on extension activities)


  • All librarians who are fully paid up members of ALJALS
  • Attend at least three meetings for the ALJALS year (June-May)
  • Nominees must have at least two years experience as a librarian in the Jamaica Library Service


Nomination for the award will begin in March each year. The person making the nomination will be required to complete the prescribed nomination form and forward this to the Secretary no later than May 31st .Three persons will be shortlisted from the nominations and these persons will be interviewed by a panel of five persons.
